Mulch guide

How to lay colored mulch and let the color set

Dyed mulch needs a little dry time after you spread it. These steps help the color set and keep it from washing off.

1. Prepare the area

Clear out weeds and debris. Level the surface. If you use weed barrier fabric, put it down before the mulch.

2. Spread the mulch

Lay it 2 to 3 inches deep. Keep it off tree trunks and plant stems. Rake it out evenly.

3. Let it dry

This is the most important step. Do not water right after you spread it. Wait 24 to 48 hours of dry weather before irrigation or rain, so the color can bond to the mulch.

To reduce wash-off

  • Check the forecast. Do not lay mulch if rain is expected in the next 48 hours.
  • If the mulch is dusty, wait at least 24 hours, then use a very light mist to settle it.
  • Ease into watering with light cycles after the first drying period.
