Mulch guide
How much mulch do I need?
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard. Here is how to figure out how many you need.
One cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep. Most beds use 2 to 3 inches.
How to figure it
- Measure the bed's length and width in feet, and multiply them to get square feet.
- Divide by 162 for 2 inches deep, 108 for 3 inches, or 81 for 4 inches.
- Round up.
Cubic yards by bed size
| Bed size | 2 inches | 3 inches | 4 inches |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 0.6 | 0.9 | 1.2 |
| 200 sq ft | 1.2 | 1.9 | 2.5 |
| 300 sq ft | 1.9 | 2.8 | 3.7 |
| 500 sq ft | 3.1 | 4.6 | 6.2 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 6.2 | 9.3 | 12.3 |
Good to know
- Round up so you do not run short.
- Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and house walls.
- A pickup bed usually holds about 1 to 2 yards, so check your truck's load limit.
